  • MALTA’S DOORSTOP BABY. OH BABY!

Have you been living in a cave the past 48 hours? Detached completely from the world at large? No? Well if the answer is no, then you have probably heard about the baby on the doorstep story which occurred here in Malta over the weekend. As the story goes, a mysterious birth took place. With the baby being left abandoned on the doorstep of a stranger, with umbilical cord still attached no less. No mother or parent in sight. Authorities were called in and thankfully the baby was found in good health and transported to the hospital for medical care.

A short time later, the next day in fact, the identity of the mother became apparent. And she was reunited with her baby. All’s well that ends well they say. Baby is safe, mother is cooperating and no doubt many, many questions need to be answered. Perhaps its better left alone and out of the general public’s eye. But will human curiosity allow us to do so?

Normally, in this kind of situation, I would start to feel the anger demons stir in me. I would be focused heavily on the parental act of taking your new born baby, fresh out of the womb and dumping it in a manner in which you might dispose of your garbage. Or some used magazines. My sympathy for that innocent and helpless baby would potentially override my system and send me into an internal rage. Coupled with a real need to set the record straight with a raw, mostly unbiased, and decidedly angry blog piece. Strangely, I am just not feeling it in this particular case. Oh god, somethings wrong with me.

Oddly enough, I feel like now is not the time to judge. Whilst the mother obviously acted in a somewhat stupid and inappropriate manner, we know absolutely nothing of her personal situation. What she is or has been going through. Her state of health, both physical and mental. And the situations or internal examination that drove her to make the decision abandon her new born baby. We just don’t know enough to judge.

In light of this, instead of my usual head first through the brick wall approach to opinionated communication, I thought it might make sense to rip up that hand brake with great force. And perhaps wait for the full story to emerge, instead of going with the good old knee jerk reaction.

Oh god, it’s horrible. I am being calm and thoughtful. You all must be so disappointed in me. What the hell is the matter with me? Am I going through a mid life crisis?

If I were you I wouldn’t worry too much. I am confident I will return to my usual explosive, erratic, and honest self in the shortest possible time. Until then I will leave you with in the knowledge that my nipples hurt and I must leave now to go pick flowers. Adios.
